Wireless charging is a thing of the past for Google. It was a feature last seen on Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 until the company decided to drop the feature for the Nexus 6P and 5X. The upcoming Pixel 3 is expected to come with wireless charging support. We may not see the same happening to the bigger version of the upcoming Pixel series, the Pixel 3 XL.
Google is expected to launch two new Pixel phones this year too, they could be the Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 3. Following the track record, chances are Google may launch this year’s Pixel phones in September. It is at the same time last year that the company launched the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Last year’s Pixel phones didn’t come with a notched display, but rumours say that one of the two Pixel phones this year will have a notch on the top of the front panel. It will most probably be the Pixel 3 XL, while the Pixel 3 is expected to boast of the Pixel 2-like design from both front and back. The latest leak suggests that the Pixel 3 will be made of glass, which in turn hints at the presence of wireless charging support for the phone.
This new leak from XDA Developers also reveals that the Pixel 3 will come with Active Edge support something that we have already seen on Pixel 2. For those who don’t know about the Active Edge. It is a squeeze gesture in Pixel 2 which lets users open Google Assistant, snooze alarm, and also silent incoming calls just by squeezing the sides of the phone. The Active Edge feature works similar to that of the HTC’s squeeze gesture found is HTC U11 and U11+.
The SystemUIGoogle.APK file discovered by folks at XDA Developers shows the components for Active Edge — codenamed “Elmyra”, in four phones. Two out of the four mentions the codenames of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The other two are listed with codenames — crosshatch and blueline which are reportedly for Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 3 respectively. A report that leaked last week confirmed the crosshatch and blueline codenames of the upcoming Pixel phones.
Alongside confirming the Active Edge gesture for the Pixel 3, the SystemUIGoogle.APK also reveals that the smartphone will come with another feature called the “WakeMode”.
Last week, another report by meraz9000 revealed that the back panel of the Pixel 3 will be made of glass, rather than glass window like on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The report suggests that the glass back of the Pixel 3 will come with two finish. The ‘window’ of the phone will have a glossy finish while the rear panel may have a matte finish.
